Most of t-shirt printing company has fewer than 10 employees and a turnover of no more than half a million pounds per year. Investment in Direct to Garment printers costing somewhere between 10 and 80 thousand pounds, is an important one for their company.
Until now the ability to print photo-quality images to the t-shirts is just not available. Screen printing and vinyl technology transfer can cope with up to 6 colors but never could cope with more complex graphics. You can know more about direct to garment shirt printing from various online sources.
Another interesting return for screen printing is the setup fee. You have to generate the screen before you can print and it costs between 15 and 25 pounds each. It is not unusual to have a setup fee of 100 pounds before you have t-shirts printed first. This means that you must have a large order for a design before it is feasible to continue.
Vinyl transfer does not suffer from the setup fees and give a beautiful bright solid color, but cannot afford any vignette edges.
Market demand is led by fashion to design images that are more and more complex. It can be easily created in a graphics program such as Coral Draw. This is not a problem for DTG printers because they work on the same principle as ordinary desktop printer or garden.
The DTG printer is much bigger than a desktop printer and print head sprays ink dye, not in a t-shirt, but the use of essentially the same process as the desktop printer. DTG printing has no setup costs so that it can cope with a smaller quantity print runs that have become popular with the t-shirt designer.
